Hayes Center Agriculture Education and FFA – Small Program - Big Heart
The Hayes Center Agricultural Education program is
one of the smallest in the state. Of the 20 students in high
school, 17 are enrolled in Agricultural Education. “Being
this small has some challenges,” according to Agricultural
Education instructor Randy Vlasin. “But what we lack in
numbers I think we make up in heart.
The FFA members at Hayes Center are working hard to
prove that size isn’t a determining factor in being successful.
Recently, the Hayes Center chapter won the Area III Range
Judging contest where they competed against 20 area teams,
the majority of them from larger schools than Hayes Center.
“I tell our students an old saying which may be cliché but I
feel is true, that it’s not the size of the dog in the fight but
the size of fight in the dog,” stated Vlasin. We’re giving it
our best shot to prove that statement true.”
“While the competitive side of Agricultural Education
and FFA is fun, that’s only one aspect. Building a solid
instructional program is the most important piece of what
we do. I tell students that winning plaques is nice but they
collect dust after a while. The important part is what you
learn and how you grow during the process,” according to
Vlasin.
Community involvement is also key. Vlasin gives praise
to the local community for the great support the program
receives from a financial standpoint and a willingness of
parents and other to get involved. Administrative and Board
of Education support is also key. An example of this is the
new school greenhouse under construction this fall. The
Hayes Center program received a $25,000 Monsanto grant
a year ago. Part of those funds were spent on a computer
controlled plasma arc table. The other portion went to the
purchase of a new greenhouse and the school board voted to
make up the difference to complete the greenhouse purchase.
The students and community will be working together this
fall to build the greenhouse. “We have some parents and
community members coming in to help students with the
construction. It’s really gratifying to work in a community
with this type of support. We have a good school and some
great kids. It’s a great place to teach” said Vlasin.
Hayes Center
Agricultural Education students and local volunteers help to build new
greenhouse for Hayes Center Agricultural Education program. The
greenhouse will be used for Hotriculture Class instruction and the FFA
will sell bedding plants in the spring.
