the second and third offens-
es. The sale, transportation
and cultivation of marijuana
remain illegal. So far, only
Colorado and Washington
state have legalized the drug
for recreational use, while 18
other states allow it for medical
purposes.
Despite steps toward
decriminalization, legalization
in Nebraska is not in the near
future, William Aviles said.
He is a professor of political
science and adviser to UNK’s
chapter of NORML. “The pol-
itics in the state suggest that if
we were ever to legalize it, we
would be one of the last ones to
do so.”
Currently, marijuana is con-
sidered a Schedule I drug under
federal law.
Schedule I drugs are said
to have high abuse poten-
tial and no established, safe
medical use. However, the
federal government continues
allowing states to legislate on
marijuana.
Aviles is optimistic about the
federal government’s willing-
ness to let the states pass laws.
“More states are going to
legalize it. I think it is all very
positive and it is exciting to see
how Colorado and Washington
continue with the experiment,”
he said.
This fall the student senate
will review the constitution that
McGuire and his cabinet draft-
ed to decide if NORML will
become a student organization.
If it’s approved, members could
then vote for officers.
Upon approval, McGuire’s
goal is for NORML to have
biweekly meetings with an
open forum for discussion.
Eventually the group plans
to have events for the student
body and discuss marijuana
laws on a broader platform.

Group thinks it’s time to talk about legalizing marijuana in Nebraska, so it has asked to be approved as a campus organization
