The tragic event of a few days ago has brought to public attention the incidence of teenage drinking in Kearney. Many of the stories that are circulating are undoubtedly exaggerated or perhaps even untrue, but the underlying problem exists.
It is apparent that the problem is more severe and more widespread than many realized. One can never place the blame entirely on the young people or their parents; it also belongs to the schools, the churches and the community.
Everyone is in shock and may think things will change. However, hiding behind anonymity will not solve anything. Until every person who was present at the party on that Saturday night is willing and brave enough to come forward and admit he or she was there, there can be no permanent change. Until the schools, the churches and the community can come together to provide solace, shelter and support, there can be no healing.
Kearney cannot afford to lose one more young life. We cannot afford to have one more damaged heart or mind.
