A ‘farewell’ in Amherst

Amherst last weekend gave a fitting farewell to an old friend when patrons gathered for an auction of desks, chalkboards and other fixtures of their town’s 1928 school building.

An addition that went up in 1993, along with an impressive new facility completed last year, will replace the venerable structure, which soon will be razed.

Thanks to last weekend’s auction, the old school will live on in the hearts of the people who were educated inside its walls, unlike the majority of old buildings bulldozed for parking lots.

Antique lights, maple flooring, furnace grates, lockers and even the bricks are heading to new homes.

The auction served as a sort of wake, allowing the building’s former students and teachers to let go.

“Things need to progress. It’s important we advance,” said Charlotte, (Crocker) Kezior of Merna, a former Amherst teacher.

True, but as Amherst’s auction demonstrates, it’s wise sometimes to cling to the good lessons of the past.
